Enjoy a fascinating excursion along the paths leading to the heart of Old Royal Montenegro. This tour is a unique way to discover the three gems of Montenegro – the coastal towns of Budva and Kotor and Montenegro’s historic capital - Cetinje.
Cetinje is a pleasant small town with immense historical heritage, and together with the village Njegusi, tucked below the peaks of Lovcen Mountain, it was royal capital for 500 stormy years, and symbol of Montenegrin freedom and traditions. This tour will help you explore the very heart of the Old Royal Montenegro and its connection with coastal towns of Budva and Kotor.
If we start the tour from Kotor the road will immediately take us to Cetinje via the old road – the famous 25 serpentines. Climbing up the twisting road with breathtaking views of the bay below, we will reach the first stop on our tour – village Njegusi, a birth place of the famous ruler and poet Petar II Petrovic Njegos.
Njegusi is the place where you will taste the finest Montenegrin food products – dried ham and cheese (njeguski prsut and njeguski sir) and see some of the important monuments from the previous centuries:
Once we have peeked into the locals` meat dryers and tried their prsut we continue our tour toward Cetinje – The Old Royal Capital.
The quiet town with its immense historic heritage lies small in a karst field surrounded by steep mountains. It began its story as a traditional village in a small secluded valley on the slopes of the Lovcen mountain - only to become the country’s capital in 15th century.
Its relatively unfavorable location was a huge plus during the constant attacks of the Turks but in the 20th century it became a limiting factor. While Podgorica is the administrative center and present capital, Cetinje always remained an important religious and cultural centre for Montenegrins.
Our next and last stop – Budva, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic is now the most famous summer resort on the Montenegrin coast. We will visit the Old Town and hear the legends about the Theban king Cadmus and development of the town from Greek period to turbulent middle ages, the devastating 1976 earthquake and the latest progress of the best-known spot on the Montenegrin coast.
As this is whole day tour it should start in the morning hours, preferably from 8-10 o’clock.
Recommended items are sun protection, appropriate footwear and at least 1 bottle of water.
Camera is also recommended because the tour will take us to many beautiful places worth capturing.
