Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro, and its administrative, cultural and economic centre. The city is situated in the central part of Montenegro, on a wide plateau that is stretching from mountains in the North and Skadar Lake in the south, at the confluence of Moraca and Ribnica rivers.
The wider area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, but its urban history starts with the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century B.C. In that period, in the wider area of the city there were three urban settlements, Doclea, Birziminium and Alata.
During the early Middle Ages, the Slav settlement called Ribnica grew on the confluence of Ribnica and Moraca rivers, serving as a stronghold but also allowing the artisans and traders to inhabit the other shore.
Dating from the period of Illyrian-Roman wars, Podgorica was always at the crossroads for Greek travellers, Roman legionnaires, Byzantine messengers, Serbian noblemen, Venetian merchants, Turkish invaders, Montenegrin warriors, Fascist occupiers and Yugoslavian liberators.
